After three months in Argentina we leave Friday July 14 for Iguazu Falls, then on to Rio de Janeiro and other destinations in southeastern Brazil. The falls are on the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Photos coming soon!
Below is an assortment of photos and videos from around Buenos Aires and a sisters day trip to San Antonio de Areco and Estancia Ombú.
Recoleta Cemetery, a few blocks from our apartment.
A one-man-band at the Sunday Féria Artesanal Recoleta.
Fun evening with a BA newcomers group, mostly retirees, at a gorgeous repurposed monastery, now Atis Bar.
San Telmo street art.
Vegan punk rockers yeah!
Thought for the day.
Outside San Telmo Market on street fair day.
The Palacio Barolo celebrated its 100th birthday on July 7. It was the dream and the brainchild of two Italians who came to Buenos Aires in the early 1900’s, and built it based on the Divine Comedy. The ground floor is hell. Then comes purgatory. And the top is heaven. I took a tour just before sunset and after riding up 14 floors in a 100-year-old elevator and climbing 8 flights of narrow winding stone stairs was rewarded with a sunset view over Buenos Aires.

An iconic pizza place in Barrio Colegiales. We were taken there by an Argentinian couple Abram met at a street food fair. She's lived within a 10-block radius of her current house in Colegiales for her entire life, over 70 years. And has been getting pizza at this place for most of that time. The super cheesy pizza is called fugazzetta. There was a line down the block the entire time we were there; mostly takeaway.
A Jarra Pingüino (wine carafe) at the lively and delicious Cafe San Juan.
My sister Gail came to visit a week ago and we took a guided day trip with a very small outfit called Camino Pampa out to the small historic town of San Antonia de Areco and a nearby estancia. We had an interesting walking tour around the town, seeing historic sites/buildings and also visiting several studios where artisans were working in silver and leather. At lunchtime we drove out to the estancia for welcome empanadas, a horseback ride or carriage ride around the property, and a fantastic asado lunch. Then music and dancing! I'm pretty sure Gail and I slept most of the way back to Buenos Aires. Below are a few images from our day with the Gauchos.
As we leave Buenos Aires tomorrow, I'm saying hasta luego and not adios. In the fall (spring here) we will travel south in Chile into southern Patagonia and back into Argentina, to see glaciers, mountains, lakes, then head all the way down to Ushuaia and penguins. Since flights mostly transfer through Buenos Aires we will probably stay in BA again before heading north in November-ish. After 3 months in this city it feels a bit like home and we will be sorry to leave. Onward to Brazil!
Espe
I love the videos, Val. The architecture is stunning. And, cemeteries are so fascinating!

Wow Val - the time is flying- and what a time you and Abram are having! I love the way you are capturing all the different flavors of this adventure. The street art, the staircase with the black and white floor, that amazing looking pizza! How fun that you got some sister time too. Thanks for bringing us along, looking forward to the next part - Brazil will offer bossa nova, beautiful beaches, great bars and spectacular jungles. Can’t wait to see it through your eyes.
Every time you post here I am bowled over. Spectacular photos. I don’t see myself getting to S. America - thank you SO much for sharing your wild adventure. I absolutely love seeing the detailing of the architecture and a glimpse of the texture of life. (That pizza looked crazy enticing). How are you dong with the Spanish by now? Continue with wonderful adventures!
