When you travel people often ask, "what's your itinerary?". When you travel for a year there's no itinerary; there are ideas, concepts and possible plans, based on weather, geography, political situations and our interests. And responding to suggestions made by people met along the way.
It's a BIG continent! We start in Buenos Aires, located next to the indentation between Argentina and Uruguay - that's the Rio de la Plata. We will probably stay there 3-4 months, also visiting northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southeastern Brazil.
In the fall (their spring) we intend to head west to Chile and onward to Easter Island. I've always wanted to see the Moai!
There's an elusive rumor about a Chilean Naval ship that sails from Valparaiso to Easter Island a couple of times a year - first stop Robinson Crusoe Island! - taking a few paying passengers. I would love to do this 7-day crossing but if it doesn't work out we will fly.
After that we intend to head south to southern Patagonia and penguins and glaciers and icebergs.
Then back up the coast of Chile and on to Bolivia, Perú, Ecuador, and into the Amazon Basin. Our base in the Basin will be Manaus, Brazil, population 2.5 million. City people that Abram and I are, this seems perfect! It has quite a history - there is a gorgeous ornate opera house which was built in the late 1800's; the first performer was Enrico Caruso, on January 7, 1897.
I will post more later about the nearby "disappearing island", Alter do Chao, Santarem (google it!).
Eventually we will make our way to Cartagena, Colombia, find a Caribbean beach town and relax for a few weeks/months; we hope to visit good friends on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica in February. Which brings us almost to the one year mark.
Will this be how it actually happens? No way to know!
Departure date April 12, 2023 with one-way tickets to Bueno Aires. It's almost here.
I'm late to the party and just learning about Val and Abram's big adventure. "Oh the places you'll go..." I love vicariously traveling with my friends! You will have amazing adventures and I wish you good luck and good health! ❤️
I can’t wait to follow along on your adventures as Michael and I plan our much anticipated South America trip ( never vacation)
I commented to someone about a month ago that your Instagram posts are always so interesting. The place you know and visit are so cool.. I can't wait to follow this journey and live vicariously thru your adventures! Viajes seguros mi amiga!
Awesome!
Our recent two month trip to Spain was completely different from what we had originally planned. Many of our favorite things grew from suggestions once we were there. BTW, do either of your speak Spanish?
